Gua Sha Therapy Can Bring Amazing Relief From A Variety Of Health Concerns

Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medical treatment that helps relieve pain and provides other health benefits. Gua Sha practitioners palpate their patients looking for areas that feel tight. These areas are then rubbed with a spoon or similar instrument until they turn red and become somewhat bruised.

Gua sha translates from the Chinese as “to scrape away fever”. Traditional Chinese medicine has long held that this procedure helps release unhealthy elements from the injured (bruised) areas created by the treatment, and stimulates blood flow which brings on a healing effect. Gua sha treatment is sometime referred to as “spooning” or “coining” in English.

As you will see in the video demonstration below, the gua sha technique involves repeatedly stroking the skin with a smooth edged tool. Usually, the skin is lubricated with a massage oil to facilitate the treatment. While this may appear to be quite painful, and some testify that it is, the health benefits are said to make the pain “not a concern”.

Gua sha is often used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments, as part of an overall strategy to address specific health concerns.
